no wakeup call, running only a couple minutes late, all is well. Today was the military hospital, so we 22 got into the 2 vans, me in the 1 w/good a/c and bad shifter driver. Blaine had already spoke w/ Marie Ens from a Place of Rescue and Gail ( Joleen's mom) and I were able to get a private tour with her of the palliative care ward. The ward had folks with cancer, HIV and TB. Good shape, clean, no machines at all, 3 beds in a room, no nursing staff. Sometimes the french Dr.s responsible for this ward do not appreciate the christians are seen as " getting in the way" no problems anywhere else in the hospital. No problem today. We met a man and his sister. He is HIV +, with TB (Antegon A and B +) and his wife is infected as well. They handed me his paperwork, 36 years, HIV+ (elisa test), CD4 of 116. Wife, 27 HIV +, CD4 of 416. He is not on ARV's yet until the TB has been dealt with, they agreed it was ok for me to take a picture. Ran into Joleen and Kim in the hall, that had been paired with 2 Khmer who didn't speak english. Answered her ? of which ward they were in and there risk for TB (none really). Walked around the building and went to another orphanage. warehouse. Marie says there is no word for up keep in Khmer, I saw dirt and mold and peeling paint and holes and I was not impressed.... compared to the Place of Rescue, this sucked. " All the children here are HIV+, some are orphans" I am not sure what the some comment meant. The one child I picked up was either malnourished or had some sort of mass in his abdomen. Tomorrow we travel to Siem Reap by bus, 5 hours... to Angkor Wat. I have sand flea bites. I have a gecko in my room. 600 pictures so far. Saw a man carry a cooked pig on a hanger? while riding his bicycle through traffic. I sweatt hrough all my clothes. I continue to drink water like a fish, heat exhaustion always lurking. I have cankles (unknown area where calf meets ankle) No intestinal problems, will gain weight here. Today at the Central Market, my size was the only topic of conversation....grumble grumble.... off to the a/c in my room. Love ya, Jen Shay
In October a group of staff from Heritage Family Services and members of Deer Park Alliance Church will be making the long trek to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We will be visiting an organization that we currently sponsor called Place of Rescue, as well we will travel to Udon, Thailand to teach ESL in a prison. The staff of Heritage Family Services donate a portion of their paychek to sponsor Place of Rescue (for more information about this organization, check out the links on this blog).
In previous years, Heritage has funded the building of two schools in Vietnam. In the Spring of 2006 a group from Heritage and Deer Park Church went to Vietnam to help build a dormatory for one of the schools in a remote village. To see pictures of this trip follow the Heritage Family Services link and click on Global Initiatives on the navigation bar.
